In-office Dry Eye Care
Advanced Dry Eye Treatments in Centennial
When drops and lid care are not enough, in-office treatments can reach the cause. At Hamilton Vision Center, we use intense pulsed light, radiofrequency, and low-level light therapy to improve how the oil glands that keep your tears from evaporating work. These treatments are usually recommended for moderate to severe dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction that has not improved with traditional care, and most patients notice a difference over a series of sessions.
Treating Chronic Dry Eye With Innovative Therapies
When eye drops alone are not enough, we offer in-office treatments designed for chronic dry eye. These therapies go beyond symptom relief to address the underlying causes and improve how the glands that support a healthy, stable tear film work. Most patients complete a series of sessions, and many begin noticing improvement after several treatments, although results vary with the cause and severity of your dry eye. Because dry eye is an ongoing condition, some patients also benefit from occasional maintenance treatments. If you have managed dry eye for years without real relief, these treatments are worth exploring.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a light-based therapy first developed for skin care that also works well for evaporative dry eye. During treatment, carefully calibrated pulses of broad-spectrum light are applied along the lower eyelids and cheekbones. The light targets two key drivers of dry eye disease:
- Meibomian gland dysfunction: the heat from IPL softens and liquefies hardened oils inside blocked glands, so they can flow freely again.
- Inflammation and eyelid bacteria: IPL can reduce inflammation and help manage conditions associated with eyelid bacteria and Demodex mites in appropriate patients.
IPL is comfortable, takes about 15 minutes, and is typically done as a series of sessions spaced a few weeks apart for the best results.
Radiofrequency and Low-Level Light Therapy
Radiofrequency (RF) delivers controlled thermal energy to the eyelids using a small handheld device. The heat penetrates deep enough to melt solidified oils inside the meibomian glands, clearing blockages that prevent normal oil secretion. RF also stimulates collagen production in the eyelid tissue, which supports a healthier gland structure over time. Treatments require no downtime and take only minutes in the office.
Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) uses specific wavelengths of near-infrared light to energize cells at a mitochondrial level. This process warms the glands, reduces lid inflammation, and improves oil quality without any heat-based discomfort. LLLT is especially well-suited for patients with lid sensitivity or who are new to in-office dry eye care.
The Aesthetic Benefits of Our Dry Eye Care
IPL and radiofrequency were developed as medical treatments, but both also work on the skin around the eyes. Because they deliver targeted light and thermal energy to that tissue, patients often notice improvements beyond their dry eye symptoms, including:
- Reduced redness: IPL can reduce the redness from superficial blood vessels linked to rosacea around the nose and cheeks.
- More even skin tone: light energy can soften pigment irregularities and sun spots in the treated area.
- Softened fine lines: the collagen stimulation from RF and IPL gradually firms and smooths the skin around the eyes.
These cosmetic improvements are a natural side effect of treating the same tissue that drives dry eye. We always put your eye health first; any skin benefits that follow are a welcome bonus.
What to Expect at Hamilton Vision Center
Every treatment plan starts with a comprehensive dry eye evaluation. We use advanced imaging to assess your tear film, meibomian gland health, and eyelid structure, giving our dry eye doctors an objective picture of what's actually happening with your eyes, not just your symptoms.
Based on those findings, we determine which treatment combination is the right fit for you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. Some patients benefit most from IPL, others from radiofrequency or LLLT, and many from a combination. We'll explain what we recommend and why before any treatment begins, so you can feel confident in the plan.
