When Standard Contact Lenses Fall Short
Standard soft lenses are built for average corneas. If yours is steep, flat, irregular, or scarred, a soft lens can blur, slip, or feel wrong no matter how many brands you try. We start by mapping the exact shape of your cornea with the Oculus Keratograph, then design specialty lenses to match, giving you sharp, stable vision that soft lenses cannot provide. Fitting hard-to-fit eyes is work we do often, and it usually takes a few visits to dial in. The result is worth it.
Types of Custom Lenses We Offer
Rigid Gas-Permeable Lenses
Rigid gas-permeable lenses, or RGPs, are small, firm lenses that hold their shape on the eye. That crisp optical surface gives some of the sharpest vision available, especially for astigmatism and irregular corneas. They take a short adjustment period, but many patients would not switch back once they see the clarity.
Hybrid Contact Lenses
Hybrid lenses combine a rigid center for crisp vision with a soft outer skirt for comfort. They are a good middle ground if RGPs feel too firm, but soft lenses do not correct your vision well. We fit hybrids for astigmatism, early-stage keratoconus, and eyes that want both sharpness and all-day comfort.
Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that vault completely over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye. Because they never touch the corneal surface, they are ideal for keratoconus, irregular corneas, and patients with severe dry eye. The fluid reservoir they create provides both optical correction and lasting comfort throughout the day.
Ortho-K and MiSight® Myopia Lenses
Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses are worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea, giving clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts.
MiSight® is a daily soft lens clinically proven to slow the progression of myopia in children. Both are excellent tools for myopia management. Our eye doctors will work with you to determine which approach fits your lifestyle and prescription goals.
Contact Lenses for Astigmatism
Astigmatism comes in many degrees, and not every lens corrects it well. For mild to moderate cases, custom toric soft lenses stabilize on the eye to keep the correction aligned. For high or irregular astigmatism, we often turn to toric RGPs, hybrid lenses, or sclerals. We match the design to your cornea rather than defaulting to a one-size-fits-all solution.
Keratoconus Contact Lenses
Keratoconus causes the cornea to progressively thin and bulge forward into a cone shape, making standard lenses impossible to fit well. Depending on how far the condition has progressed, we may fit you with hybrid lenses for early stages or scleral lenses for more advanced cases. Scleral lenses vault over the irregular surface and deliver sharp, stable vision that rigid or soft lenses cannot replicate. We monitor the condition closely and adjust your lenses as your cornea changes.
